If you own a home anywhere near California's wildland-urban interface, the smartest money you can spend this year probably is not on a bigger sprinkler system. It is on home hardening. Home hardening means upgrading the physical structure of your house so it can survive the way California fires actually spread. That distinction matters, because most homes in a wildfire do not burn from a towering wall of flame. They burn from embers.
Windblown embers can travel more than a mile ahead of a fire front. They land on roofs, pile up in corners, slip through vents, and catch dry debris on the ground next to the wall. Home hardening focuses on closing those entry points. Defensible space, the cleared zone around your home, still matters and is required by law in many areas, but hardening the building itself is what keeps an ember from becoming a house fire.
Here is a practical checklist, organized by the parts of your home most likely to fail.
Roof
Your roof is the single largest target for embers. If you have a wood shake roof, replacing it is the highest-value upgrade you can make. Move to a Class A fire-rated assembly using materials like composition asphalt shingle, metal, concrete tile, or clay tile.
Do not stop at the roof surface. Check the gaps under tile or metal roofing where they meet the edge. Embers lodge in those spaces. Install bird stops or profile closures to seal them. Keep the roof and gutters clear of pine needles and leaves, and consider metal gutter guards. If your roof is aging out anyway, talk to a local roofer about a Class A replacement rather than patching an old assembly.
Vents
Vents are the most overlooked ember entry point in the whole house. Standard attic and crawlspace vents pull embers straight into the framing, where they ignite insulation and wood out of sight.
Replace or retrofit vents so they resist embers. The common baseline is 1/8-inch noncombustible metal mesh over every vent opening, though 1/16-inch mesh blocks smaller embers. Better still are vents specifically listed as ember- and flame-resistant. Pay special attention to soffit vents under the eaves and any vents low to the ground where debris collects.
Eaves and Soffits
Open eaves trap rising heat and embers against the underside of your roof. Boxing in, or "soffiting," your eaves with a noncombustible or ignition-resistant material removes that trap. Use fiber cement, exterior-grade material rated for the job, or a Chapter 7A compliant assembly. Seal any gaps where the roof meets the wall so embers cannot work their way inside.
Windows
Windows fail from heat before flames ever touch the house. Once a window breaks, embers and fire pour straight into the living space. Single-pane windows are the weakest link.
Upgrade to dual-pane windows with at least one pane of tempered glass. Tempered glass resists the thermal shock that shatters ordinary glass. Metal or other noncombustible frames hold up better than vinyl, which can soften and deform in high heat. This is one of the more expensive line items, so prioritize windows facing slopes, vegetation, or prevailing wind.
Siding and Exterior Walls
Embers collect at the base of walls and against any horizontal seam. Your siding needs to resist ignition where those embers pile up.
Noncombustible or ignition-resistant siding, such as stucco, fiber cement, or masonry, performs far better than untreated wood. Pay attention to the bottom six inches of the wall where it meets the ground or the deck, since that is where debris and embers gather. Seal gaps and joints, and make sure the material carries down low enough that fire cannot get behind it.
Decks, Porches, and Attachments
A wood deck is essentially a fire ramp bolted to your house. Embers fall through the gaps between boards and ignite whatever is stored underneath.
Rebuild or resurface decking with materials that meet California's exterior deck requirements, which point to noncombustible, ignition-resistant, or heavy-timber options. Keep the area under the deck clear of stored firewood, cushions, and clutter. Enclose the underside if you can, and treat fences the same way. A wooden fence that connects to the house acts like a fuse leading straight to the wall, so use a noncombustible section, often metal, for the last several feet before it meets the structure.
Garage and Doors
The garage is a common failure point because it holds so much flammable material and often has poor sealing. Add weatherstripping around and under the garage door to block ember intrusion. Make sure the door between the garage and the house is solid and well sealed. For entry doors, exterior-grade solid-core or noncombustible doors with tight weatherstripping give embers fewer paths inside.
About Chapter 7A Materials
When you shop for hardening upgrades, you will see products described as "Chapter 7A" or "WUI listed." Chapter 7A of the California Building Code sets the ignition-resistant standards for homes in wildfire-prone areas, covering roofing, vents, siding, decking, windows, and more. Buying to that standard takes the guesswork out of it. Even if your specific parcel does not legally require 7A materials, choosing them means you are installing components tested against real wildfire exposure rather than guessing.
Retrofits Versus New Builds
New homes in California's highest-risk zones already have to meet these standards. Older homes usually do not, which is where retrofits come in. You do not have to do everything at once. Sequence the work by risk: roof and vents first, then eaves, then windows and siding, then decks and fences. Each completed component lowers the odds that an ember finds a way in.
